Booted ‘Survivor’ contestant Erik Cardona never saw it coming

November 6th, 2009, 5:41 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Erik Cardona grew up in Chino Hills, which made him the closest we had to an O.C. contestant on Survivor” this fall. Well, that and a special  moment he shared as a lad with one of Pedro’s colleagues here at the Register — more on that later.

So after Cardona suffered the equivalent of a 2-by-4 upside the head in Tribal Council on Thursday’s episode, we were interested in chatting with our O.C.-adjacent ex-Survivor on his experiences on the wild and wooly shores of Samoa.

A bartender and substitute teacher before the show, Cardona says he was a fan of the show who never dreamed he’d appear on it, until one day while walking in Santa Monica with friends, a casting agent saw something she liked.

“I met someone who literally grabbed me by the collar and said, ‘Would you ever (be on ‘Survivor’)?” he says. “I said, ‘Lady, you have no idea how perfect the person you just bumped into is.”

Big Brother 11 spoiler alert: 1 down, 12 to go

July 16th, 2009, 5:10 pm by Roxanne Hack, staff writer

BIG BROTHER 11Braden Bacha, from Dana Point, has been voted out of the Big Brother house. With a tie vote, Head of Household Jessie Goddardz, also from Orange County, made the final decision to oust him.

Braden, the first to be voted out this season, is a surfer and actor. He made a headline or two when the house guest list was first announced, thanks to a full-frontal clip of him on YouTube.

On Tuesday’s episode, Jessie and the rest of the “Athlete” team targeted Braden, despite not originally nominating him for eviction. After winning the Veto Competition, Russell Kairouz, part of Jessie’s alliance, decided to use the Power of Veto on Lydia Tavera. Braden replaced Lydia on the chopping block next to Chima Simone, whose goodbye speech on Thursday was mostly bleeped out as she threatened to evict anyone who voted for her to leave.

After a Q&A HoH competition, Ronnie Talbott (”Brains” team) is the new Head of Household.

Next episode: Nominations on Sunday

O.C. ‘hunk’ makes a surprise return to ‘Big Brother’

July 10th, 2009, 9:22 am by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

bigbro_jesse2mediumWe already knew that the 11th season of  “Big Brother” would star one bro from Orange County, 28-year-old Braden Bacha, who was born and raised in Dana Point.

But midway through the premiere on CBS on Thursday we were rubbing our eyes and double-taking at the sight of a very familiar face: Jessie Godderz, the 23-year-old bodybuilder from Huntington Beach, who made it about halfway through the 10th season of the show during its run in the summer of 2008.

The return involved one of those twists “Big Brother” cooks up for each new season: after dividing the contestants into four high school cliques — the Athletes, Brains, Popular and Off Beat — host Julie Chen announced they’d be joined by one more contestant, chosen from a group of four contestants from past BB seasons.

BIG BROTHER 11

The new guys and gals all dangled from giant diapers while hanging onto toilet seats emblazoned with their names — we are not making this up — and the last group to withstand the wicked wedgies got the extra player.

The Brains went out first, big surprise there, then the Off Beat — a politer name for Freaks and Geeks, we suppose. And when Bacha, pictured at the right, lost his grip on the toilet seat, the Popular clique were done and the Athletes got the bonus player in the person of Jessie, still seemingly as in love with himself and his body as he was when last we saw him.

Godderz also won the right to be the first head of household, so he’s not going home too soon — should be fun!

O.C. murder case featured on ‘48 Hours Mystery’ on Saturday

January 23rd, 2009, 6:34 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

The murder of Barbara Mullenix, the Huntington Beach woman who was stabbed to death and then dumped in Newport Harbor, gets the TV news magazine treatment on “48 Hours Mystery” on Saturday, Jan. 24.

The show — which airs at 10 p.m. on KCBS-TV/2, casts the story as that of a woman who’d wanted to become a TV star meeting an untimely end. (Mullenix had acted as an extra in several episodes of “CSI,” according to a CBS press release on the show.

After looking first at former husband Bruce Mullenix, and discovering he had a solid alibi, police turned their attention to the couple’s daughter, Rachael. Mother and daughter had often fought, and the daughter seemed a natural suspect.

And while the show will drag out the drama — and the outcome of the investigation and trial — until the last five minutes, Register readers know well the outcome: Rachael Mullenix and her boyfriend, Ian Allen, both were convicted of the crime last fall and sentence to many, many years in prison.

Still, to see how the story plays out for a national TV audience, tune in tonight at 10 p.m. on the CBS network.

Huntington Beach ‘hunk’ in jeopardy on ‘Big Brother 10′

July 14th, 2008, 11:53 am by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

jessiebb.jpgBodybuilder Jessie Godderz might be all snuggly with ‘Big Brother’ housemate Michelle Costa, but at the end of the season premiere on Sunday, the 22-year-old from Huntington Beach found himself one of two people up for possible eviction from the house and the show this week.

Godderz sat out one challenge — missing a shot at winning a vintage car — and after turning in early (apparently bodybuilders need their beauty sleep) joined in a hissy fit with housemate Renny Martyn.

And that was enough to get both Jessie and Renny nominated for eviction.

Now he’s got the Tuesday episode to try to save his skin by winning the “power of veto” or convincing its winner to use it on him. Failing that, Jessie will have to take his chances when the eviction show takes place on Wednesday.

Huntington Beach hunk on upcoming season of ‘Big Brother.’

July 8th, 2008, 11:29 am by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

jessie.jpgJessie Godderz, a 22-year-old body builder from Huntington Beach, is one of 13 contestants cast by CBS for the new season of ‘Big Brother’ that kicks off on Sunday, July 13.

He joins gay rodeo cowboy, a Hooters waitress, and a 75-year-old Korean War veteran in the house, which is actually built on a soundstage in Los Angeles, all of them there to compete for a $500,000 prize.

Godderz told the Associated Press that in addition to his work as a bodybuilder, he’s a personal trainer and model, so it makes perfect sense, we suppose, that he says that the most unique item in his suitcase were his ‘posing trunks.’

I mean, personally, we don’t go anywhere with out ours, either.

Godderz, who said he ended up on the show when is manager got a call from a casting agency, asking him to audition, said he plans to bring a few tricks of the gym to play in the show.

“I have to play psychological mind games when I walk into a gym, so I think it’ll be a little like that,” he said of his strategy.

The producers are billing this season, the 10th, as a return to the roots of the show. For the first time since the third season, all of the contestants are strangers to each other.
