Wednesday highlights: Tired chefs, bad songs

November 18th, 2009, 8:29 am by The Watcher

Jennifer - Dead chef walking?Interesting bits from tonight’s prime-time schedule:

Cooking without gas: The once-obvious final four of “Top Chef” appears obvious no more. The Voltaggio Brothers and Kevin Gillespie still look like locks, but former Iron Chef Jennifer Carroll seems to have rusted out. Does she go home tonight, or will she limp along for one more week? We find out at 10 on Bravo. (A special note to fans of “Top Chef” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”: The restaurant featured in last Sunday’s episode of “Curb,” L.A. Farm in Santa Monica, is run by former “Top Chef” contestant Stefan Richter.

Wish I hadn’t looked: One of the high points of the Watcher’s week is peeking at the list of songs we’ll be hearing on the upcoming episode of “Glee.” Imagine my glee at seeing that two of tonight’s numbers rank among history’s worst: “(You’re) Having My Baby” and “Endless Love.” I don’t care to hear either, even if sung by Lea Michelle. We’ll hope the rest of the episode is better. 9 on Fox.

‘Top Chef’ tells a sad veggie tale

October 28th, 2009, 10:53 pm by The Watcher

Padma and Padme“Top Chef” was full of trickery and unexpected twists Wednesday night, but the most unexpected twist of all was that the episode was full of some bad-looking food.

What has been the most consistently appetizing season so far faltered badly, as the seven remaining contestants were asked to cook for - shudder! - vegetarians.

Lead veg and guest judge was actress Natalie Portman, one of the occasional celebrity guests on “Top Chef” who seems to be there for no reason other than to get a good meal. (And judging by her scarily thin frame, she could use one. How many people make Padma Lakshmi look big?)

The twist was that the contestants had been told they would be cooking at judge Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak restaurant but weren’t told until the last minute that they would be making vegetarian dishes. The visions of porterhouses dancing in their heads were quickly replaced by smoked kale and braised leeks.

If the producers had thought the twist would unwind the chefs, they were correct. Jennifer Carroll, one of the season’s four dominant contestants, ended up in the bottom three, and Mike Isabella, who looked like the one dark horse, got eliminated.

Even the top group’s dishes failed to earn much praise. Michael Voltaggio’s banana-flavored polenta looked like it might carry the day, but it was Kevin Gillespie’s mushroom medley that won and Michael V.’s increasingly annoying ego that got scorched.

Kevin’s win was his fourth in 10 weeks. Combined with the earlier QuickFire challenge win, also his fourth, Kevin stands as as the favorite going into the home stretch.

Does ‘Top Chef’ have room for dessert?

October 27th, 2009, 1:51 pm by The Watcher

Eat!Bravo will be expanding its “Top Chef” line with the addition of a new series, “Top Chef: Just Desserts.”

As the name implies, the series will set pastry chefs against each other, and presumably fill in the hole in the meal that so many “Top Chef” contestants leave.

No word on when the series might air, but casting has begun. If you would like to take a stab at demonstrating your dessert-making skills, an open audition will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Tom Colicchio’s Craft restaurant in Century City.

The Watcher is a big fan of both “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters,” but I can’t help but wonder if this isn’t a step too far - particularly given how many cake shows we already have to choose from.

“Ace of Cakes,”  “Amazing Wedding Cakes,” “Cake Boss,” “Ultimate Cake Off,” “Wedding Cake Wars” - Can we stomach one more? I suppose the “Top Chef” folks will throw in a tiramisu and a tart or two, but still.

‘Top Chef’: Restaurant Wars does collateral damage

October 22nd, 2009, 9:25 am by The Watcher

***NEWS FLASH: “Top Chef Masters” has been renewed for a second season next summer. Host Kelly Choi and the same crew of judges will return - plus Gail Simmons.***

LaurineRaise your hand if you knew 30 seconds into the episode that Laurine Wickett was going home Wednesday night. That’s what I thought.

Laurine had been in the background most of the season, so when the episode opened with the focus on Laurine, we knew she was doomed.

Despite the obviousness of the elimination, the episode still managed to frighten the heck out of us, as the annual Restaurant Wars episode almost did in two of the top contenders, Kevin Gillespie and Jennifer Carroll.

Laurine, Kevin, Jennifer and Mike Isabella made up one team; the Voltaggio Brothers, Eli Kirshstein and Robin Leventhal the other. Even though the former team won the QuickFire, the latter delivered the worst beatdown in the history of Restaurant Wars.

Kevin undercooked the lamb, Jennifer served a broken sauce, and either could have been eliminated for that. But with Laurine available for sacrifice, the result was obvious.

On the happy end, Michael Voltaggio was awarded the win, his second, leaving the top four contenders with all nine of the Elimination Challenge wins.

‘Top Chef’: The beat goes on and on and on

October 14th, 2009, 10:49 pm by The Watcher

Ash to ashesThe Watcher is a lover of pork and pork-related products, so you could say I was in hog heaven (although I would never use such a dastardly pun) over Wednesday night’s episode of “Top Chef.”

But before we dissect the goings on at the Pork & Pinot challenge, let me brag that I have eaten braised pork shoulder at both Gordon Ramsay and Tom Colicchio restaurants. Tom, please pack your knives and go. Gordon’s was better.

Now back to our show: The Watcher has noted (some might even say whined) that the four Iron Chefs - Bryan Voltaggio, Kevin Gillespie, Jennifer Carroll and Michael Voltaggio - have completely dominated the season. So we were hopeful that the iron grip might be cracked when the episode began with large doses of Ash Fulk, Eli Kirshstein and Robin Leventhal.

Our hopes were raised further when guest judge Charlie Palmer chose Eli as the winner of the annoying, product-placed Quick Fire challenge.

Things got back to normal with the Elimination Challenge, where the nine remaining chefs were assigned cuts of pork and asked to create a dish to pair with a specific bottle of pinot noir. After the last of the wine was poured, the Iron Chefs were the judges’ top four picks, and Ash, Robin and Laurine Wickett had settled at the bottom.

After his fourth bottom finish in eight weeks, Ash was asked to leave - although the two survivors don’t figure to last more than two or three more episodes.

Kevin won the EC, his third, and left the Iron Chefs 8-for-8 on the season.

One of the Big Four might well be in peril next week, during the annual Restaurant Wars challenge. The teams seem fairly split, with the Voltaggio brothers, Robin and Eli on one team, Kevin, Jennifer, Laurine and Michael Isabella on the other.

‘Top Chef’ turns unpredictable - almost

October 8th, 2009, 3:37 pm by The Watcher

Ashley - knives packed, goneFor an instant, I almost believed the judges of “Top Chef” were ready to divert from the season’s seemingly predestined path and deliver us an authentic shocker Wednesday night.

The judges had determined that either Ashley Merriman or Michael Voltaggio would be eliminated, and we viewers momentarily considered the improbable, before Padma Lakshmi brought us back to our senses with the news that Ashley would be packing her knives and going.

Michael V. belongs to the season’s dominant quartet, along with his brother Bryan, Kevin Gillespie and Jennifer Carroll - a group the Watcher had dubbed the Iron Chefs. The other three held up the group’s reputation, winning both challenges and taking up three of the four top-group slots.

That leaves the ryori no tetsujin with 5 QuickFire wins, 7 Elimination Challenge wins and 17 top-group placements. The other 13 contestants have combined for 2-0-10.  At this point, it would be a shame if the Big Four weren’t the Final Four.

Michael V.’s jeopardy did underscore what I like least about “Top Chef”: that chefs who show little creativity and “hide” in the challenges often outlast much better competitors who take risks. Wednesday, the person who should have gone home was Ash Fulk.

Ash did nothing to help his partner Michael V., and admitted that he was the weaker chef, yet was deemed not responsible for the partnership’s failed dish exactly because he did nothing.

The show’s questionable strategy of rewarding the inoffensive and weak reached its nadir last season, when Hosea Rosenberg limped his way to the finale and then won. Luckily, that seems unlikely to happen this season.

Do you have what it takes to be ‘Top Chef’?

October 6th, 2009, 10:40 am by The Watcher

padmaNot surprisingly, Bravo has given “Top Chef” the green light for its seventh season.

The Emmy-nominated cooking competition continues to score well with the viewers - and it’s just about the only Bravo show you can watch without wanting to take a shower afterward.

The renewal comes with the announcement of a casting tour. I’m not sure how many contestants actually come out of these whistle-stops, but unless you get a call from the “Top Chef” casting director, this is going to be your shot.

The fun begins Oct. 18 at San Francisco’s new restaurant The Parlor. The closest casting event will be Nov. 15 at Tom Colicchio’s Craft Restaurant in Century City. Don’t be surprised if you bump into the Watcher, who will be wowing the judges with his duo of grilled cheese and Rice-A-Roni.

And yes, host Padma Lakshmi is pregnant. No word yet on how the timing of the season and the pregnancy will work out. Will she skip season seven, or will she join the ranks of expectant reality hosts such as Julie Chen and Heidi Klum?

‘Top Chef’: New challenge, old result

September 24th, 2009, 9:25 am by The Watcher

Ron Duprat“Top Chef” served up its best Elimination Challenge of the season Wednesday night, a task that was inventive yet free of gimmickry.

The result, of course, was familiar. The Iron Chefs dominated, and another hapless also-ran left - in this case Ron Duprat.

The challenge asked the chefs to “deconstruct” a classic dish that each contestant chose at random. It was a rare opportunity to see the chefs challenged both in imagination and technique, without asking them to cook over a flaming trash can or feed a room of kindergarteners.

Most of the chefs performed well, and the judges seemed to have a hard time settling on the top four. Ultimately, they chose three Iron Chefs - Kevin, Michael V. and Jennifer - and Ashley. The win went to Kevin for his undone chicken in mole negro, leaving the Big Four 6-for-6 in the ECs and 14-for-23 in top-group placements.

The bottom three seemed obvious: Ron and his not-very-deconstructed paella, Ash and his mashed-potato-free shepherd’s pie and Laurine with her soggy and nearly chipless fish and chips. (I did think Laurine had the hardest task. How do you deconstruct a french fry?)

The QuickFire was less interesting food-wise, but more interesting politically. The contestants ganged up on Robin, whom they thought should have left the previous episode rather than Mattin. All of the contestants but Robin wore Mattin’s signature red scarf to the challenge.

Robin turned the tables and won the QuickFire - the second QF in a row that an Iron Chef did not win. Eli fueled the anti-Robin sentiment by saying she used her personal cancer story to influence the judges. He expands on those comments on Bravo’s website.

‘Top Chef’: Cowboy cuisine confounds the Big 4 - sort of

September 17th, 2009, 11:28 am by The Watcher

Mattin NobliaWednesday night, “Top Chef” seemed intent on breaking the iron grip the Iron Chefs - Jennifer, Kevin and the Voltaggio Brothers - had put on the contest.

Barbecue genius Tim Love arrived to confound the chefs with cactus and cowboy cooking, and it almost worked.

The cactus QuickFire succeeded in flipping the standings. Bryan V. was at the bottom, Laurine and Mattin were at the top, and Michael I. became the first outside the Big Four to win a challenge.

The rustic Elimination Challenge was less disruptive. Forced to cook on fire pits with rudimentary equipment, the Iron Chefs acquitted themselves well. Jennifer and Kevin only managed the middle group - despite raves from the judges - but the Voltaggio Brothers were back on top, and Bryan redeemed himself with his third EC win in five weeks.

On the other end, Mattin made his second-straight trip to the bottom group - and made the fatal error of standing behind his dish. Tell Tom Colicchio that you don’t understand why you are in the bottom, and you are heading home.

Mattin, please pack your knives and go. And take your Basque neckerchief with you.

Addendum: It is time to declare ceviche a salad for the purposes of “Top Chef.” Serve one, and be prepared to deal with the consequences.
