‘Real Housewives’ Watchalong: Dull on the rocks

November 20th, 2009, 2:08 am by The Watcher

housewives_lead

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. Or maybe it just seems that way. Once again The Watcher will bull his way through an entire episode of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” so you don’t have to.

Previews indicate this will be one of most boring outings on record. The Watcher is tempted to eschew his usual hard liquor accompaniment in favor of caffeine. Or DDT.

But that’s the coward’s way out. We must gather our courage and soldier ahead.

***

Last week on “RHOC”: Fighting and whining prevailed. Tonight, no doubt, will be considerably different.

We notice that Alexis does not yet merit a spot in the “RHOC” credits sequence. Of course, she hasn’t been drunk or fought with another Housewife yet, so she hasn’t earned one.

The episode opens in the familiar Orange County community of Scottsdale, Ariz. We watch an SUV pull into the – get this – Hotel Valley Ho, a place the producers could not possibly have picked accidentally.

Gretchen and Slade emerge from the car, Slade now sporting the subtitle “Gretchen’s boyfriend,” and check into the Valley Ho. I may never tire of typing “Valley Ho.”

And why are we in Scottsdale, you ask? Gretchen is here to see her girlfriend Kelly. Oh, Kelly. I completely forgot she lived there. It all makes perfect sense now.

If you have a paper bag or wastebasket nearby, please grab it, because we are about to launch a vomit-inducing sequence detailing how much Gretchen and Slade are in love and how genuine their relationship is and not completely faked for TV or for the now-broke Slade to grab hold of some of Gretchen’s inheritance from her dead fiancé, Jeff.

Gretchen anticipates our skepticism: “If I had to fall in love with anybody, why did it have to be Slade Smiley, right?” Right.

Thursday highlights: The important stuff

November 19th, 2009, 11:45 am by The Watcher

Jurors 1 and 2Some interesting offering from tonight’s prime-time schedule:

One winner: “Project Runway” concludes its sixth season tonight. The three finalists - Irina, Althea and Carol Hannah - show their lines at New York Fashion Week (filmed in February) and the judges select a winner. The Watcher’s money is on Irina. 10 p.m. on Lifetime. And don’t forget to vote in our poll!

One loser: The Hidden Immunity Idol is back up for grabs on “Survivor: Samoa.” Want to bet Russell finds it? Someone who doesn’t find it will be voted out of the merged tribe tonight and take the third seat in the jury box. 8 p.m. on CBS.

Six, um … Our local favorites, “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” are back for another hour of drinking, fighting and other assorted intellectual endeavors. 10 p.m. on Bravo. The Register’s Richard Chang previews the action.

Greetings, folks! Welcome back to another thrilling preview of “The Real Housewives of Orange County”!

Every Thursday, before the show airs, we’ll give you a sneak peek at what transpires on that night’s episode of the intellect-challenging Bravo reality TV series, now in its fifth season. blog_slideshow_templatehousewivesTonight’s episode, the third of the season, is scheduled to air at 10 p.m., though it will be available earlier if you have satellite TV or Bravo’s HD channel. Check your local listings.

Tonight’s episode begins with Gretchen Rossi and Slade Smiley visiting Scottsdale, Ariz., to see Gretchen’s friend Kelly. They’re staying at the Valley Ho Hotel. Please don’t read any symbolism into the name of that distinguished institution.

Gretchen likes getting out of town to escape the drama for a while. She adds, “Slade has been one of the best things to come into my life after losing Jeff.”

The couple go to the hotel pool to relax. Slade says to Gretchen, “I love you ’cause you love me that I’m poor.” Nice grammar, Slade.

‘Real Housewives’ Watchalong: Lift your glasses

November 13th, 2009, 8:00 am by The Watcher

The new kid in town: Alexis BellinoDid you hear about the “Real Housewives of Orange County” drinking game?

Every time the gals take a drink, you take a drink. If you’re still upright at the end of the hour, you check into rehab.

Fun times.

Speaking of overimbibers, we begin episode two right where we left episode one, with the five Housewives pouring down the drinks at the St. Regis Monarch Beach.

The ostensible reason for this gathering is to celebrate Lynne’s new jewelry business, but in truth the producers just wanted to get Tamra and Gretchen in the same room to resume their fight from last year’s reunion show. In the same room and drunk.

Tamra and Gretchen do not disappoint. We are treated to the terms “whore,” “nipple,” “vajayjay,” “bitch,” “(bleep 1)” and “(bleep 2)” in short order.

Priceless repartee. One imagines the Algonquin Round Table was much the same.

In a brief confessional, Lynne moans, “This was supposed to be my great dinner party,” and feigns being upset. A legitimate acting career is not in her future.

Finally, Tamra declares, “I quit,” and for a moment we are hopeful that she’s talking about the show.

But no, this is merely the signal for the gals to break into cliques, with Vicki following Tamra out of the suite while Lynne and Jeana stay behind to help Gretchen bad-mouth the departees.

Tamra and Vicki stomp through the tastefully beige halls of the St. Regis, loudly proclaiming Gretchen to be a gold-digging, lying, tramp – as if that is some newly discovered surprise to us all.

Back in the elegant suite, Gretchen and Jeana come to the conclusion that Tamra is a crazy, judgmental, white-trash bitch.

(Folks, do consider the St. Regis as the site for your next drunken catfight with your gold-digging white-trash friends.)

The blow-up concluded, we spin forward a few days to a backyard tanning party at Gretchen’s joint in Laguna Niguel.

Do I even need to report that drinking plays an important role?

‘Real Housewives’ preview: Tan and surgery

November 12th, 2009, 12:05 pm by The Watcher

housewives_leadhousewivesGreetings, “Real Housewives of Orange County” fans. It’s the Watcher filling in for Richard Chang this week as we look ahead to what’s in store for us tonight.

Unfortunately, the Register couldn’t get its DVD of the episode out to the Watcher’s palatial estate, so I had to make do with the preview clips available on the Bravo website.

We do know that things will begin with the resumption of last week’s catfight at the St. Regis. I’m sure such a high-end resort is thrilled to be associated with such high-class behavior. What began last week as simple pettiness between Gretchen and Tamra devolved into swearing at each other. Is there anywhere to go from there? Swearing more loudly perhaps? We aren’t told.

But we do know that to calm herself down from the Battle Royal, Gretchen throws a tanning party in the back yard of her Laguna Niguel home. The purpose of the get together is “to laugh and giggle and just be who I am,” Gretchen says.

The party consists of drinking - of course - and taking turns getting spray tanned in a makeshift booth.

Slade, Gretchen’s “friend” according to the subtitles, starts things off on a classy note by stepping into the tanning booth naked. Well, not 100 percent naked. He puts a sock over his private parts to keep things clean and family-friendly.

“He has a sock on his hee-haw,” Gretchen helpfully informs us.

Thursday highlights: Designers and plotters

November 12th, 2009, 10:44 am by The Watcher

Irina for the winSome viewing highlights from tonight’s schedule:

The Final 3: Is everyone happy with how the last eliminations turned out on “Project Runway”? I’m still undecided as to whether Carol Hannah should be at Fashion Week ahead of Gordana, but as long as witchy Irina is in and weeping Christopher is out, the Watcher won’t complain. Tonight, we get the first half of the two-part finale. 10 p.m. on Lifetime.

The Final 11: I just read the official “Survivor” Tweet, which promises “one of the most memorable Tribal Councils” ever on “Survivor: Samoa.” The Watcher is always up for that. Last week’s previews implied that Russell is in trouble, which makes me think he’s safe. 8 p.m. on CBS.

The Middle 6: Our lovely ladies of leisure return tonight for the season’s second installment of “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” We’ll have a fuller preview later today, as well as the Watcher’s blow-by-blow review of the episode tomorrow morning. Oh, you want to watch it? Tune in to Bravo at 10 p.m.

‘Real Housewives’ Watchalong: How much am I being paid?

November 6th, 2009, 8:34 am by The Watcher

Gretchen - It's not her fault!Welcome to the first “Real Housewives of Orange County” Watchalong, wherein the Watcher provides a running commentary on the events of the episode.

Longtime readers are familiar with the Watcher’s take on “American Idol.” Now, I dip even farther down the ladder of credibility to take on the local ladies of liquor and lip collagen.

The upside: no singing.

Let’s plunge right in.

The episode begins with a helpful recap of last season.

Vicki bad-mouthed her husband, Jeana had a hard time with the real estate market, everyone hated Lynne, Tamra hated everyone and, oh yeah, Gretchen’s fiancé died.

All caught up? Good. Let’s roll.

Thursday highlights: Mergers and acquisitions

November 5th, 2009, 10:35 am by The Watcher

Galu on top, for nowHighlights from tonight’s TV schedule:

The merge: Why does “Survivor” call it “the merge” instead of “the merger”? That’s like when football announcers talk about players “defensing” each other. Either way, the event takes place tonight on “Survivor: Samoa,” with Galu bringing eight players and Foa Foa just four. The F-Fers seemed doomed, don’t they? No tribe has survived that sort of imbalance since - oh, yeah, since last season. 8 p.m. on CBS.

The acquirers: Our favorite local lasses, “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” resume their televised antics of spending money and getting drunk. (OC Register’s Richard Chang previews the new Housewives episode.) The Watcher will pitch in with his thoughts tomorrow morning. 10 p.m. on Bravo.

housewives_slideshowGreetings, folks, and welcome back to another exhilarating preview of “The Real Housewives of Orange County”!

Every week, before the show airs, we’ll give you a sneak peek at what transpires on tonight’s episode of the Bravo reality TV series, now in its fifth season, if you can believe it. Tonight at 10 is the season premiere of the fifth season. It will air earlier if you have satellite TV or Bravo’s HD channel. Check your local listings.

Tonight’s episode starts with original housewife Vicki Gunvalson. She is riding in a car with her daughter Brianna and her son Michael. It’s morning, and they are headed for an exciting day of skydiving.

“I just want to see you fall out of a plane,” Michael, 23, says to his mother in the back seat. Brianna, 22, squeals in delight. It’s ominous for Vicki, yet humorous for the general viewer.

“I’m 47, now I feel like it’s my time,” Vicki says.

The trio arrive at Pacific Coast Skydive and check out the single-engine plane.Vicki is scared.

A midday chat with the Real Housewives of O.C.

October 27th, 2009, 5:53 pm by RICHARD CHANG, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

dscn3357_housewives_edit

The season 5 cast of “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” Photo by Richard Chang/The Register.

So as an arts and entertainment reporter for The Orange County Register, I had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing the cast of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” today. Season 5 of the popular reality TV series airs at 10 p.m. Nov. 5.

We gathered at Vicki Gunvalson’s house behind the gates in Coto de Caza. In attendance were Gunvalson, original housewife Jeana Keough, Tamra Barney, Gretchen Rossi, Lynne Curtin and the newest housewife, Alexis Bellino. She’ll appear in the second episode of the new season, I believe.

Tamra wore a white blouse and black pants. Jeana wore a light green/chartreuse dress. Vicki wore a purple dress. Gretchen donned a knit dark green and black dress with black boots. Lynne was in a hot pink dress. And Alexis wore a silvery top with a black belt, black pants and black boots with tall heels in them.

In between photo and video shoots, I conducted individual interviews with the housewives and a group interview. We discussed last season, the upcoming season, and what it’s like to be a “Real Housewife of Orange County.”

The faltering economy has hit each housewife in its own way. Gretchen is no longer in real estate, and Jeana has seen her real-estate income slashed by two-thirds. Tamra has seen the value of her home plummet — it’s upside down, like a lot of our homes. Lynne was forced to move out of her house because of trouble paying the rent.
