Brooke Burke joins ‘Dancing With the Stars’

March 8th, 2010, 10:04 am by The Watcher

An upgrade from Sam Harris

Brooke Burke will take over the co-host role on “Dancing With the Stars” when the new season beings March 22.

Tom Bergeron revealed the news today on “Good Morning America.” Brooke – the winner of season 8 on “DWTS” – replaces Samantha Harris, who departed the show several weeks ago.

Acoording to various reports, among the other finalists for the job were Melissa Rycroft, Vanessa Minnillo and Melanie Brown. When Melissa co-hosted the cast unveiling on “The Bachelor” finale last week, it looked as though she might be the front-runner, but the producers opted for the more-experience Brooke.

Brooke previously hosted the E! series “Wild On” and, more significantly, hosted the live reality show “Rock Star” for two seasons on CBS. She is almost certain to be an upgrade.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ slims down

“Dancing With the Stars” revealed its cast of “stars” for the upcoming 10th season during Monday night’s finale of “The Bachelor.”

The group is the usual list of Olympic champions, NFL stars, singers, actors on the decline and ABC promotional tie-ins, but there was one big piece of good news: There are only 11 of them.

The producers seem to have agreed with most critics and viewers that the 16-couple ninth season was far too much of a good thing. That does mean that some of the professional dancers – most of whom are now bigger stars than their partners – will be missing from action this season. Among them: Karina Smirnoff, Lacey Schwimmer and Jonathan Roberts.

Season 10 debuts March 22.

Here’s a complete list of the dancing stars and their professional partners:

Is Kate Gosselin headed for ‘Dancing With The Stars’?

March 1st, 2010, 4:45 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

That’s the word our Mom Blogger Roxanne spotted on RadarOnline, which apparently plans to lock down the multiple-birth category of Internet gossip.

Check out Roxanne’s post for the details she spotted – and let her know whether you think it’s right or wrong for Kate to step out for a samba or a waltz on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” (If you ask Pedro, Roxanne goes easy on Kate: There’s a difference between leaving the kids with Jon to step out to the movies and the relentless pursuit of fame that signing up for “DWTS” suggests.)

And check back here later for a full report from the Watcher on both the upcoming “Dancing With The Stars” cast, which will be announced during the finale of “The Bachelor” tonight. The Watcher, of course, will also let you know whether O.C.’s Tenley “won” the heart of this season’s bachelor, or whether he picked that other gal.

Samantha Harris leaves ‘Dancing With the Stars’

January 28th, 2010, 2:54 pm by The Watcher

Samatha Harris“Dancing With the Stars” will open in March without Samantha Harris, Tom Bergeron’s sidekick since season two.

Sam told People she is leaving to concentrate on her duties with “The Insider,” which is a bit like quitting the New York Yankees to join the roller derby.

Harris has been criticized by many,  including the Watcher, for her bland and often tongue-tied backstage interviews on “DWTS.” Meanwhile, the show’s producers are rumored to have offered Paula Abdul big money to be on next season.

It’s difficult to imagine that even the people who let Kristi Yamaguchi run unopposed would consider it fair to allow professional dancer/choreographer Paula to be a contestant, so maybe Sam’s role is what they have in mind for her.

Find out who won ‘Dancing With The Stars’

November 24th, 2009, 8:00 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

final3_slideshow_templateAnd now it is done. They’ve turned out the lights in the studio where “Dancing With The Stars” reigned all this fall, as one by by the stars blinked out until just three remained.

When the show opened Tuesday, singer Mya, entertainer Donny Osmond and rock ‘n’ roll daughter Kelly Osbourne were the last three in the running for the mirror ball trophy awarded the winner.

A whole host of also-rans appeared from this season (Tom DeLay, Kathy Ireland, Chuck Lidell) and previous ones as well (Adam Carolla, Jeffrey Ross, Cloris Leachman). Singer Whitney Houston performed two numbers. And then…

Well, to find out who won, read on….

Who will win ‘Dancing With The Stars’ tonight?

November 24th, 2009, 12:45 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

final3_slideshow_templateAt last the finale of “Dancing With Stars” is here, with the final three couples learning their fate when the last episode airs on ABC from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight.

Will Mya, by far the best dancer of the bunch, hang on for the win? Will the toothsome Donny Osmond, who for a spell lived in Orange County, come from behind to catch her? Can the likeable Kelly Osbourne prove that ladylike elegance can come from the home of heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne?

Well, we do have our opinions, so click on through the slide show and see how we predict it will end tonight

Tuesday highlights: Donny, aliens win

November 24th, 2009, 9:13 am by The Watcher

Elizabeth MitchellNotable events on tonight’s prime-time schedule:

ABC gets the lion’s share of our attention tonight, as two of its shows wrap up their fall schedules.

“Dancing With the Stars” (9 p.m.) – The ninth season concludes tonight, and from the Watcher’s seat, a Donny Osmond victory seems certain. If Donny and partner Kym Johnson could close a six-point gap on Joanna Krupa & Derek Hough, how do Mya & Dmitri Chaplin make a two-point lead stand up? Having said that, regular readers know how cloudy the Watcher’s crystal ball can be. The coronation takes place in a two-hour extravaganza.

“V” (8 p.m.) – The Watcher had high hopes for “V,” based on the first few minutes that ABC released online. The show after those first few minutes has proven a disappointment. The story has unfolded much too quickly, stripping it of its air of mystery. Further, Elizabeth Mitchell’s character is the only one I care about. “V” finishes its four-week fall run tonight. The series returns in the spring, but I don’t think I will.

Monday highlights: Finale day, fateful day

November 23rd, 2009, 9:29 am by The Watcher

The President and First Lady arrive in DallasNoteworthy offerings on Monday’s prime-time menu:

2009: The big event tonight, of course, is the first night of the two-part finale of “Dancing With the Stars.” The three remaining couples – Mya & Dmitry Chaplin, Kelly Osbourne & Louis Van Amstel and Donny Osmond & Kym Johnson – will dance three times each. It’s also the fans’ last chance to vote. Tuesday night brings a final dance and the crowning of the champion. The action starts at 8 on ABC.

1963: For the 46th anniversary of President John Kennedy’s assassination, the National Geographic Channel has put together archival footage, much of it rarely seen, for a two-hour special on the events of Nov. 23, 1963. “The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination” begins at 9.

2009: The final episode of “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ airs at 9 on TLC, and the Watcher says, “good riddance.” A once charming little show has been ruined by over-commercialization and the conversion of Jon and Kate Gosselin from overwhelmed parents to a public embarrassment. We assume that Kate and/or kids will return at some point in some new format, but who knows where or when?
