‘American Idol’: Ellen DeGeneres? Really?

September 10th, 2009, 7:42 am by The Watcher

Ellen DeGeneresThe Watcher was as floored as anyone by the news that Ellen DeGeneres would replace Paula Abdul as a judge on “American Idol.”

Fox announced late Wednesday that she had been signed to a five-year deal.

Apparently, The Powers That Be at Idol scoured the entire music industry and found that - unlike fashion, dance or cooking - no one in the business could think and talk at the same time.

I guess if we’re going to pick a non-musical figure, Ellen is an excellent choice. She’s  funny, smart and can extemporize. The odds of her speaking in complete sentences are pretty good. She’s also an “AI” fanatic with a long-standing relationship with the show.

And she can’t be as bad as Randy Jackson or Karandy Jackson.

But the correct choice to replace Paula was no one. Four judges are simply too many. It didn’t work with the guest judge format in seasons 2 and 3. It certainly didn’t work last season we found ourselves listening to less music and more blabbering than ever.

‘American Idol’ top four notches a first

September 2nd, 2009, 4:42 pm by The Watcher

Danny GokeyDanny Gokey, the third-place finisher on season eight of “American Idol,” signed with 19 Recordings/RCA Nashville - the first time that the “AI” home label has taken on a season’s entire final four.

The others - winner Kris Allen, runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-placer Allison Iraheta - all will have albums out in November. Danny’s probably will arrive early next year.

You’ll recall that Danny, LensCrafters’ favorite contestant, began last season of “AI” as the odds-on favorite, but became more annoying as the weeks wore on. He also never developed any sort of definitive style, so it seems strange that he was signed to RCA’s country music arm.

But then, if they can sell America on Kellie Pickler, they must be doing something right.

Blame the Watcher for Paula’s departure

August 12th, 2009, 8:34 pm by The Watcher

paulaVery interesting story in the New York Times detailing the failed negotiations to keep Paula Abdul in the fold at “American Idol.”

One of the reasons things came apart, according to writer Edward Wyatt, was Paula’s lingering resentment that her “AI” fellows did not work hard enough “to rebut sufficiently insinuations and jokes about her unreliability and possible substance abuse.”

Insinuations and jokes about poor Paula? What sort of person would engage in that behavior?

Not that Paula needs our sympathies. She’s told her Twitter followers (Twitterites? Twitterees?) that she’s been busy this week in development meetings with network executives. Acording to Radar Online, she has also fielded an offer to join “Australian Idol.”

‘Idol’-Paula breakup declared official - maybe

August 6th, 2009, 1:21 pm by The Watcher

paula-lgThose of us wondering whether the relationship between Paula Abdul and The Powers That Be at “American Idol” was really, truly over can keep wondering.

Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice answered questions from the press today at the Television Critics Association gathering in Pasadena and said that as far as Paula and “American Idol” go, “Negotiations have concluded.”

But Rice still managed to leave the door open. According to the report from Lynn Elber of the Associated Press, “Asked what Fox’s reaction would be if Abdul agreed to take the network’s last offer, Rice replied he didn’t expect her to. But he didn’t respond when asked what the network would do if she agreed to it.”

So basically, if Paula does come back to “AI,” she’ll have to crawl. Brinksmanship is a fine negotiating tool, but one needs to be willing to fall over the brink.

In the meantime, guest judges will sit in on the second-round of the auditions. Victoria Beckham and Friend of Adam Lambert Katy Perry already have signed on.

Forever our girl: The Watcher salutes Paula Abdul

August 5th, 2009, 10:17 am by The Watcher

In honor of Paula Abdul’s departure from “American Idol,”  the Watcher thought it proper to recall some of her finest moments from the show.

“American Idol” will go on, but never again will it be so incoherent.

First, a few of the Watcher’s favorite Paula quotes:

“You know, it’s strange at this part, this part of the series, it just gets kind of, you know, they’re all good, uh, all of you are real good. It’s sometimes you just tap in the heartstrings of America. I don’t know. It’s America votes, don’t know why.”

“I think America has to remember you have to vote for every single person you like whether they’re No. 1 or whether they’re No. 12.”

“It can be very difficult with these genres of music to be able to be in the seat and escape.”

“You’ve moved me from the beginning, but you are just handsome, evolved performer that isn’t, is, you are an American Idol.”

And my No. 1 choice, spoken to Taylor Hicks during the semifinals of season five:

“Every, just, you are just, guhhh.”

Now for a few memorable moments, courtesy of YouTube., beginning with Paula’s greatest gaffe.

Paula’s departure will alter ‘American Idol’

August 5th, 2009, 6:47 am by The Watcher

paulaabdul_cryingPaula Abdul told her fans via Twitter that it’s official: She’s leaving “American Idol.”

The show’s producers responded with a statement confirming Paula’s decision and bidding her bon voyage

This ends a long off-season in which Paula tried to negotiate a huge raise from a position of weakness. According to numerous reports (none of them confirmed), Paula had been making $2 million to $4 million a year and was asking for $10 million to $20 million. Unfortunately for Paula, almost no one liked the four-judge format, and Kara DioGuardi was willing to work for a fraction of what Paula wanted.

The Watcher has been one of Paula’s loudest and most persistent critics, but now that she’s gone I’m a little sad. Which judge will we make fun of now?

Randy Jackson, the giant lump on the left, is bad, but not in a funny way. Simon Cowell’s indifference is definitely not funny.

That leaves us with Kara and her suspect math and history skills. We loved her confusing eight with six or telling Danny Gokey that he should have performed “early Aerosmith” after he sang a song from the band’s first album.

But it’s not the same. Kara makes mistakes, but she doesn’t take us along on a hallucinatory adventure every time she opens her mouth. She doesn’t giggle and cry and fall off her chair.

I’m loath to say it, but we’ll miss you, Paula.

It’s official: Kara’s back on ‘American Idol’

August 3rd, 2009, 10:45 am by The Watcher

karaConfirming the report we referenced last week, the Powers That Be at “American Idol” confirmed today that Kara DioGuardi will return for season nine.

The release, of course, contains no information on Kara’s salary - believed to be considerably less than the other judges make but healthy enough to feed a family of 80 - nor on the status of Paula Abdul.

With the first round of auditions finished and the judges ready to review the singers who made the first cut in just a few days, Paula remains unsigned.

The only ray of light for fans of Paula was this oblique reference from Cecile Frot-Coutaz, one of the executive producers. “We’re very pleased with (Kara’s) contributions as the fourth judge on the panel.” (Italics added.)

‘American Idol’: Kara back, Paula softening?

July 30th, 2009, 2:51 pm by The Watcher

karaFor those of us hoping that the producers of “American Idol” might come to their senses and drop the four-judge idea, here’s a bit of bad news:

E! Online is reporting that Kara DioGuardi has come to terms for season nine. The articles quotes “a source” as saying “The deal is done.”

Meanwhile, Paula Abdul still has not re-upped, even though the judges are due to report for duty in early August. But she may be backing off of her tough negotiating stance.

Her manager said a couple of weeks ago that Paula would not be back thanks to her horrible treatment at the hands of the “AI” powers.

But Paula has been Twittering away today on the situation, including this missive: “Hi everyone. I’ve been quiet as we are trying to work out details of how I can return to Idol.”

The saddest story you’ll read today

July 27th, 2009, 9:03 am by The Watcher

Alexis Cohen, the nutty “singer” who enlived the audition episodes of “American Idol” in seasons seven and eight, was killed in a car accident over the weekend.

Alexis was walking in the beach town of Seaside Heights, N.J. when she was struck by a car. The driver has been charged with reckless driving, according to nj.com.

Alexis earned her moment of fame in season seven with a memorable rant against Simon Cowell, but her 15 minutes weren’t over. She returned in season eight a changed woman, exuding sweetness. Her singing, unfortunately, had not improved.

Alexis’s mother told nj.com that her daughter had auditioned in June for season nine.

‘American Idol’: The gang’s all here - or not

July 20th, 2009, 8:54 am by The Watcher

paulaabdul_cryingAfter Ryan Seacrest inked his pathetically meager $45 million deal for three more years of “American Idol” and declared, “I fully expect you will see the whole team next year,” Paula Abdul’s negotiation team threw cold water on the concept of a peaceful off-season for America’s No. 1 series.

Of course, the one thing we can be sure of is that we can’t believe any public statements made during contract negotiations, so who knows where the Paula situation stands.

But none of the judges is signed on for season nine yet, so there is still hope that one of them won’t re-sign and the ridiculous four-judge experiment will be over.
