‘Rocky & Bullwinkle’ celebrate their 50th anniversary

November 19th, 2009, 3:00 am by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

rockybull1blog

It was 50 years ago today — Nov. 19, 1959 — when the world discovered Rocket “Rocky” J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, two of the finest citizens in all of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota.

The flying squirrel and his good-natured if slow-witted moose pal arrived on ABC as stars of  “The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show,” the zany, off-beated animated series created by the late Jay Ward, whose daughter Tiffany Ward, a longtime Orange County resident, still manages the family business.

To mark the golden anniversary of the show, we called up Ward to chat about why the show and the characters and stories her father created still endure.

“My dad always told me that he was writing for the adults, but that the show worked on three levels,” Ward said. “The little kids would get the funny names and voices, the adults would get the humor and the inside jokes, and the kids in the middle would enjoy both ends.

“I suspect that’s why we’re still here 50 years later,” she said. “It was such a unique piece of writing.”

rockyslideshowIn most episodes, Rocky and Bullwinkle ended up trying to stop the show’s scheming villians, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. Interspersed with those storylines were other characters with their own adventures, including the Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right and Sherman and Peabody, a young boy and his very smart dog, respectively.

Ward, who we first met a few years ago when Cartoon Network launched a new version of “George of the Jungle,” another of Jay Ward’s animated creations of the ’60s, says fans of the various shows have a few new treats coming soon.

The fourth season of “Rocky & Bullwinkle” will be out on DVD soon, and an animated movie version of  “Mr Peabody and Sherman” is in development at Dreamworks with Bob Minkoff (”The Haunted Mansion,” “Stuart Little,” “The Lion King”) attached as director.

Ward says she doesn’t remember much about the premiere of “Rocky & Bullwinkle” 50 years ago. She thinks the family just watched at home, and  says that’s how she’s planning to celebrate this anniversary, too.

“I’m just going to enjoy that it’s been 50 amazing years that they’ve been around,” Ward said. “And my dad would be so proud.”

Greetings, folks! Welcome back to another thrilling preview of “The Real Housewives of Orange County”!

Every Thursday, before the show airs, we’ll give you a sneak peek at what transpires on that night’s episode of the intellect-challenging Bravo reality TV series, now in its fifth season. blog_slideshow_templatehousewivesTonight’s episode, the third of the season, is scheduled to air at 10 p.m., though it will be available earlier if you have satellite TV or Bravo’s HD channel. Check your local listings.

Tonight’s episode begins with Gretchen Rossi and Slade Smiley visiting Scottsdale, Ariz., to see Gretchen’s friend Kelly. They’re staying at the Valley Ho Hotel. Please don’t read any symbolism into the name of that distinguished institution.

Gretchen likes getting out of town to escape the drama for a while. She adds, “Slade has been one of the best things to come into my life after losing Jeff.”

The couple go to the hotel pool to relax. Slade says to Gretchen, “I love you ’cause you love me that I’m poor.” Nice grammar, Slade.

Who will get booted from ‘Dancing With the Stars’?

dwts_slideshowWith Pedro felled by the flu, I as guest-blogger am stepping in to predict what will happen tonight on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Just two weeks until one lucky celebbrity is awarded the ninth Mirror Ball Trophy. But first we have the business of sending home one more unlucky (or untalented) celebrity before next week’s semifinals.

In our assessment of Monday’s show, we recap the two dances performed by each contestant and offer our predictions as to whether he or she is in danger of the boot. Check back after 7 p.m. Pacific time to see if we were correct.

housewives_slideshowGreetings, folks, and welcome back to another exhilarating preview of “The Real Housewives of Orange County”!

Every week, before the show airs, we’ll give you a sneak peek at what transpires on tonight’s episode of the Bravo reality TV series, now in its fifth season, if you can believe it. Tonight at 10 is the season premiere of the fifth season. It will air earlier if you have satellite TV or Bravo’s HD channel. Check your local listings.

Tonight’s episode starts with original housewife Vicki Gunvalson. She is riding in a car with her daughter Brianna and her son Michael. It’s morning, and they are headed for an exciting day of skydiving.

“I just want to see you fall out of a plane,” Michael, 23, says to his mother in the back seat. Brianna, 22, squeals in delight. It’s ominous for Vicki, yet humorous for the general viewer.

“I’m 47, now I feel like it’s my time,” Vicki says.

The trio arrive at Pacific Coast Skydive and check out the single-engine plane.Vicki is scared.

A midday chat with the Real Housewives of O.C.

October 27th, 2009, 5:53 pm by RICHARD CHANG, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

So as an arts and entertainment reporter for The Orange County Register, I had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing the cast of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” today. Season 5 of the popular reality TV series airs at 10 p.m. Nov. 5.

We gathered at Vicki Gunvalson’s house behind the gates in Coto de Caza. In attendance were Gunvalson, original housewife Jeana Keough, Tamra Barney, Gretchen Rossi, Lynne Curtin and the newest housewife, Alexis Bellino. She’ll appear in the second episode of the new season, I believe.

Tamra wore a white blouse and black pants. Jeana wore a light green/chartreuse dress. Vicki wore a purple dress. Gretchen donned a knit dark green and black dress with black boots. Lynne was in a hot pink dress. And Alexis wore a silvery top with a black belt, black pants and black boots with tall heels in them.

In between photo and video shoots, I conducted individual interviews with the housewives and a group interview. We discussed last season, the upcoming season, and what it’s like to be a “Real Housewife of Orange County.”

The faltering economy has hit each housewife in its own way. Gretchen is no longer in real estate, and Jeana has seen her real-estate income slashed by two-thirds. Tamra has seen the value of her home plummet — it’s upside down, like a lot of our homes. Lynne was forced to move out of her house because of trouble paying the rent.

Jennette McCurdy and Jerry Trainor of ‘iCarly’ to shoot Nickelodeon movie

October 19th, 2009, 1:42 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

jennette_jerryblogJennette McCurdy is one of our favorite young actresses, partly because she’s great in her role as Sam on Nickelodeon’s hit series “iCarly,” and partly because the Garden Grove teen is just as nice as can be in her life off the screen.

And so we’re always happy to update you when Jennette has a fresh project. Earlier this year it was the release of her first two singles, country pop songs that are expected to lead to a full album release next year.

This week comes word that she’ll be starting work later this week on a Nickelodeon TV movie with her “iCarly” costar Jerry Trainor. (That’s the two of them at the left in a photo from the show.)

In “Best Player,” Jennette and Jerry play rival cyber athletes, or as you and I know them,  video gamers. He’s a 30-year-old living and gaming under the name Q in his parents’ basement, who ends up needing to win the big tournament to buy their house when they decide to move to Florida.

His plan looks like it might work until Prodigy, the gamer played by McCurdy, shows up to challenge him.

Shooting starts in Vancouver, B.C. on Oct. 24, with the movie expected to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2010.

‘The Tailgate Guy’ from O.C. appears on the Food Network on Saturday

October 15th, 2009, 8:54 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

tailgater1blogHis given name is Jay DiEugenio but it’s fine with him if you call him the Tailgate Guy, for that’s the name and the career the Yorba Linda man adopted five years ago when he quit his job, packed his wife and kids in the RV and set out to tailgate America.

We hope to tell you more of that story soon, but for now you can check out DiEugenio as a guest judge on “Tailgate Warriors with Guy Fieri” at 9 p.m. Saturday on the Food Network. (That’s DiEugenio on the left with Fieri on the right in the photo.)

On the show, teams representing the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills will cook and compete in a tailgater throwdown to determine which city’s fans can whip up the best parking lot meals.

DiEugenio, who has published two cookbooks – “I Got Your Tailgate Party Right Here,” in NFC and AFC editions — is a tireless promoter of the tailgating life. Each fall weekend finds him at a big pro or college game somewhere around the country. Other weekends might find him at a NASCAR race (that’s where he met up with Fieri), the X Games or even a winery or one of his kid’s band concerts.

Last Saturday DiEugenio was in Denver for the Broncos game against the New England Patriots.  A week from now he’ll be in Missouri for Mizzou’s game against Texas. But on Saturday, he’s home in Orange County for a viewing party to celebrate the Food Network show, and everyone is welcome to come out and join the Tailgate Guy as he guests behind the tailgating grill at Mikey’s Sports Bar in Fullerton.

The party runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mikey’s, located at 3159 Yorba Linda Blvd. in Fullerton.

Who did the best on ‘Dancing With The Stars’?

October 12th, 2009, 9:45 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

117788_2874Last week we bid farewell to two mediocre dancers, the broken-footed congressman Tom DeLay and actress Debi Mazar. (Who? Exactly!)

So with 11 dancers still hoofing it around the dance floor on Monday, it’s time to ask again who you think did best with their number.

Did the Olympic swimmer continue her race to the finishing touch? Did the squeaky clean Mormon pop star try to kiss a judge again? (Wait, that won’t matter in his scoring,  pardon the expression, will it?)

Tell us what you think by voting in our poll for the dancer who did the best on Monday. Then check back Tuesday for our predictions — guesses, if you will — and later in the day for the results of the elimination show.
