Michael Jackson docs won’t want to talk, but LaToya does

August 25th, 2009, 3:09 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

michaeljacksonblog1The Michael Jackson story came back to life this week with a ruling by the Los Angeles County Coroner that the death of the pop star two months ago was homicide.

And so we slipped our hand back into our bejeweled glove and started looking around for new tidbits of news to share with you about the Story of the Century. (Yes, it’s early, but after watching TV these last few months we’re pretty sure the cable networks have called it.)

First, from our old pal William Heisel, a fella who knows a thing or two about medical investigations, comes the clearest explanation we’ve seen yet of what Jackson’s docs did and why their actions leave them extremely vulnerable to all manner of legal repercussions.

In a blog post on USC’s Reporting On Health Web site,  our boy Bill (who after leaving the Register and later the Los Angeles Times now works for a health research outfit in Seattle) pores over the court documents filed in the Jackson case and concludes that Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson’s personal physician, may or may not eventually be found criminal responsible for the singer’s death, but certainly seemed to be acting  “more like a dealer” than a doctor.

For more tidbits from this new wave of Jackson death coverage, read on….

OC Idol contest kicks off with first auditions this week

July 20th, 2009, 5:44 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

briana-tyson-at-inland-idol-finalsblogThink you’ve got what it takes to be the OC Idol? Then it’s time to warm up your voice and make plans to audition.

OC Idol is a singing contest for kids and teens, an offshoot of Inland Idol which just finished its second season earlier this year. (That’s Brianna Tyson, winner of the upper division this year, in the photo to the left.)

Three auditions will be held with judges picking the best singers to advance to the semi-finals, said Bruce Sampson, one of the organizers of the contest.

The first will be Saturday, July 25, at the Village at Orange mall, followed by Aug. 8 at South Coast Plaza and then Aug. 15 at The Shoppes at Chino Hills.

Contestants are divided into three different groups by age: 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18.

You need t o come prepared to sing a one-minute a cappella song — anything you want except for rap or profanity, Sampson said — and a $35 registration fee.

Roughly 250 will make the semi-finals, which will narrow the field to 10 per age group. If you make it that far, you’ll be judged by a panel that includes Mark L. Wahlberg — not the actor, the TV game show host — and a variety of other entertainment industry professionals.

“It will be a lot like ‘American Idol’ in the sense that after each kid performs, they get feedback from each judge,” Sampson said of the finale that will pick the three winners. “The judges will vote, but it only counts for about 40 percent of the total vote, because the theater audience will vote too.”

For information on how to pre-register for the auditions and other details of the competition, go to ocidol.com

Hip bands fill ‘Rockville CA’ with fresh sounds: band and song list

March 16th, 2009, 4:23 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

‘Rockville CA’ is the new show created by Josh Schwartz (’The OC,’Gossip Girl,’Chuck’) in collaboration with music supervisor Alex Patsavas.

That’s Josh at the left, with Alex in the middle and Ricky Wilson, singer for Kaiser Chiefs, on the right.

The premise is simple: each four- to six minute Web episode appears on TheWB.com, telling a little of the lives of the club crowd, but also feature performances by an array of cool bands.

The show’s mostly little-known stars include Jelly Howie of Fullerton as Callie, the beautiful but elusive waitress. But for music fans, it’s the bands and song that will draw them in.

The show premieres Tuesday, March 17, with four episodes that feature Nico Stai, the Kooks, the Broken West and the Duke Spirit. Each Tuesday through May 12, two more episodes will air.

For a complete list of the bands that will appear on the Web series, and the songs they performed, read on….

Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart to rock ‘n’ roll in ‘Runaways’ bio-pic

March 6th, 2009, 1:24 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Dakota Fanning, now at the ripe old age of 15, will star as Cherie Currie, lead singer in the Runaways, the all-girl pre-punk band from the ’70s, Variety reports. While that might seem young, it’s the same age Currie (seen in the center of the photo here) was when the band got started.

While guitarist Joan Jett – to be played by ‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart, and seen at the far left — later found somewhat mainstream success, during their four years or so as a band, the Runways made only small ripples in the rock pool. Looking back, though, you can cite them as an influence on a host of all-female punk-ish acts, from the Go-Go’s and the Bangles to L7 to the Donnas.

Other members of the group included drummer the late Sandy West, who grew up in Huntington Beach a, second from left; guitarist Lita Ford, far right; and bassist Jackie Fox, who quit the band after a few years to be replaced by Vicki Blue, second from right here.

If you dig rebellious chicks rocking out — and really, who doesn’t? — this might be your movie. Though you have to wonder how much attitude Dakota can exude when she sings the group’s greatest (and pretty much only) hit, ‘Cherry Bomb,’ which you can ch-ch-ch-check out below.

Q: What if Japanese anime actresses had invented punk rock?

March 5th, 2009, 1:43 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

A: No one would listen to punk rock, is our best guess. (Though Pedro would.)

From the bizarre corners of YouTube comes one of the odder pieces of Japanese pop culture we’ve seen lately — and if you know your J-pop culture, you know that’s saying something.

“Pun-Colle” is the title of an album of classic punk rock songs covered by Japanese anime actresses — what, you thought we were kidding? — and it’s really, um, something to hear. Makes Chipmunk Punk sound like a real work of art, we’re thinking.

In the above video you get snippets of covers including of the Clash (’White Riot,’ ‘London’s Burning’), the Ramones (’Blitzkreig Bop’), Iggy and the Stooges (Search and Destroy’) and Blondie (’Call Me,’ which actually doesn’t sound ALL that different from the original).

You also get — Orange County alert! — the Offspring’s ‘Pretty Fly (For A White Guy). Full songs as YouTube clips are available on the poster’s profile page, so if you’re brave, feel free to experience what it would be like if instead of Dexter Holland you had Mai Kadowaki as frontman, er, frontwoman — front cartoon character? — for our local heroes.

OC drummer Ravi Jakhotia plays at the Oscars on Sunday

February 20th, 2009, 6:51 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

DJ RaviDrums, aka, Ravi Jakhotia, got his big break earlier this year when comedian Howie Mandel picked him to be his one-man band on the NBC series “Howie Do It.”

Now, though, Jakhotia, who lives in Tustin, is set to appear on an even larger stage, performing for tens of millions of viewers durin the telecast of the Oscars on Sunday.

Jakhotia, whose high-energy, super-animated drum style is both visually and musically entertaining, will be featured during the musical segment that celebrates the Best Song nominees — two songs from “Slumdog Millionare,” the movie set and made in India, where Jakhotia’s parents were born and raised, and one from “Wall-E.”

How you can win ‘Hannah Montana’ concert tickets in O.C.

October 8th, 2008, 4:59 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

It’s still not too late to win tickets to that exclusive ‘Hannah Montana’ concert at Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine on Friday, Pedro has learned.

Fans can enter to win tickets in a drawing to be held at all Bristol Farms supermarket locations, including Newport Beach, Mission Viejo and Long Beach.

And right before the concert begins on Friday, Radio Disney will be hosting a live event at the Bristol Farms at 810 Avocado Ave. in Newport Beach, where fans can compete — in a “Hannah Montana” karaoke contest, we’re told — to win tickets to the show that day.

Enter to win tickets at each location through the end of business on Thursday, Oct. 9. The Newport Beach event runs from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

And the concert — which is being filmed for the upcoming “Hannah Montana” movie  — starts at 5 p.m Friday.

Good luck!

Gwen Stefani gets a visit from the stork

August 21st, 2008, 12:35 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

stefani.jpgEven a month ago at Wimbledon, Gwen Stefani was big as a house, as the ob-gyns like to say behind your back.

And so it seemed logical and true-ish when we heard that In Touch reporting that Stefani had scheduled a C-section at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles to deliver Baby No. 2 with rocker husband Gavin Rossdale.

A few hours later came word that she’d delivered Son No. 2, or as birth certificate reads, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale.

Makes his 2-year-old brother sound positively old-fashioned with the name Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, doesn’t it?

 Speaking of Gwen:

TV Stars Rock Out For Charity And Baseball Fans In Fullerton

July 25th, 2008, 1:30 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

tvband.jpgTelevision stars including Teri Hatcher and James Denton of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” will rock out for charity in Fullerton on Saturday, July 26, playing a benefit gig after the Orange County Flyers baseball game.

The Band From TV, as the group is accurately-if-not-so-creatively named, also includes Greg Grunberg, the mind-reading cop from NBC’s “Heroes”; Jesse Spencer, the cute blond doctor from Fox’s “House” ; and Bob Guiney of ABC’s “The Bachelor.”

Hugh Laurie, star of “House,” and Bonnie Somerville, most recently of ABC’s “Cashmere Mafia,” are also band members but may not be able to make the Fullerton show.

Grunberg, the band’s drummer whose oldest son has epilepsy, started the band a few years ago to raise money for the National Epilepsy Foundation. The other celebrity performers donate their share of the profits to their own favorite charities.

Denton, a part-owner of the Flyers, arranged for the band to play tonight after the Flyers game. The game starts at 5 p.m. at Goodwin Field at Cal State Fullerton. The concert starts 30 minutes after the game ends, about 8:30 p.m.

Miley Cyrus takes over ‘Good Morning America’ on Friday

July 17th, 2008, 1:44 pm by PETER LARSEN, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

miley1.jpgEven when if you’re the most popular girl on the planet, as the Miley Cyrus PR agents bill her, you still have to get out there and promote the new product.

And so, Miley appears on ‘Good Morning America’  on Friday, July 18. The GMA appearance is part of their summer concert series, so surely you’ll hear her perform ‘7 Things,’ the first single from her new ‘Breakout’ CD.

The album — her second under her own name — seems intended to push her toward a slightly older audience, while not abandoning the millions of younger kids who fill her bank account thanks to her role as the star of the Disney Channel’s ‘Hannah Montana.’

It’s a bit of tightrope walk, but seems to be working so far: ‘7 Things,’ which has an ‘angry’ Miley singing about the seven thing she hates about some boy who dogged her, is at No. 2 on the most recent Radio Disney Top 30 countdown.
