‘Amazing Race’: And then there were three

So long, TrottersAnd so another college has its reputation irreparably damaged by “The Amazing Race.” Sunday night’s victim was Southeastern Louisiana University, alma mater of one Nate “Big Easy” Lofton.

After more than two hours of struggling to unscramble a five-letter word, Big Easy and Harlem Globetrotters teammate Herb “Flight Time” Lang decided it would be better to take a four-hour penalty rather than have Big return to the Roadblock and turn the letters A-F-N-R-Z into Franz. Folks, unless your child is 6-foot-9 or taller, don’t send them to SLU.

Of course, the real blame here lies with Flight Time, who never should have let his partner take on that task. This was not the first time that Big Easy failed to slam dunk a mental challenge - or even hit the rim.

And so the Watcher’s favorite team of the season - one of my all-time favorites, truly - leaves the Race one episode before the final.

The three pairs of finalists really seem like two contenders and a set of chaperones. Meghan & Cheyne coasted to another win Sunday and must be given the favorites’ seats on the flight from Prague to Las Vegas. Sam & Dan stand a decent chance - as long as they don’t kill each other before the finish line. Brian & Ericka have stumbled their way this far, relying on other to be even worse. I don’t see them putting it together on the last leg.

I nearly spit out my cocktail when Cheyne talked about “our strength” in Meghan and Cheyne’s little closing commentary. Is that some version of the royal “our” where he really means “Meghan’s strength”??? Maybe it’s the editing, but boy is he a whining wuss.

I was praying that the Rabbis would reject Sam and Dan’s Golem because of its broken arm, sending them back to do it over or try the beer delivery option.

Bidding a sad adieu to Flight Time and Big Easy. They deserved to go for such a bone-headed decision, but it certainly would have been more fun to have them as one of the final three teams.

Cheyne is clearly not the brains of the outfit, but he does seem able to calm Meghan down when she gets overwound. I am impressed that they always seem to be the first team out of the airport and into a cab. It’s big advantage in many legs.

I was screaming “WTF!” at the TV when Big Easy took the 4 hour penalty. While the Gay Bros should coughed up the FRANZ answer because that was the agreement, how long should it take someone to arrange other 4 letters besides F? It certainly wouldn’t have taken 4 hours. Recall that Big Easy also couldn’t figure out the combo on the briefcase but he did ask for a calculator when figuring out the Gold value event.

Sam and Dan are not deserving of the win. They took Zebra’s cab and now they baked out of sharing their answer. They simply need to go home with something other than 1st place.

Meghan and Cheyne will win but not because of his help but rather her determined attitude. She could win this thing without him and while I earlier argued with The Watcher about Dustin being the better female contestant, I think Meghan is the better player.

Team Zebra? Whine and snivel about how tough things are seems to be the hallmark of Ericka’s existence. Now if Brian and Meghan teamed up that would be an unstoppable team. Until now I thought the Hippies or Dallas and Stare were great teams but if we could do mix and match I’d pick Brian and Meghan.

Prague to Vegas? It seems like they could’ve squeezed in another couple of days somewhere such as Ireland or Canada.

After learning that the first letter was an “F”, there were only 24 different combinations to try… it couldn’t have taken more than 5 minutes to fill out the form, so at most it would have taken Big Easy 2 hours to try every possible combination… instead of sleeping on the stairs for 4 hours.
