‘Amazing Race’: Not buying the fake

November 23rd, 2009, 8:49 am · 4 Comments · posted by The Watcher

Still racingWith two more episodes of “The Amazing Race” still to come, we weren’t buying the sad music accompanying Brian & Ericka’s arrival at the Pit Stop Sunday night. The odds were heavily in favor of the leg ending without an elimination, and our suspicions proved correct.

Miss America and hubby were saved, although for how long? With next week’s episode taking place entirely in Prague, the couple will not benefit from an airport equalizer and must complete the Speed Bump. That means one of the other three teams will need to make a mjaor mistake for Brian & Ericka to catch up.

Non-elimination aside, Sunday’s episode was an excellent one, with cab-stealing, alliance-breaking, a challenging Detour and an amusing Road Block. Anyone unclear on who is the brains in the Meghan & Cheyne pairing?

And we learned another “Amazing Race” rule: Never take the subway.

That was the best episode in a really long time! I’m telling you, my arms ached just watching all of them participate in the ropes course.

One strange thing I’ve noticed this season: they’ve had lots of starts where they only give the departure time. It used to be a clear, 12-hour pitstop and they’d tell you “so and so arrived at 12:01 a.m. and they are departing at 12:01 p.m.” In a great many episodes this season, they only give us the departure time. Any idea why they’re doing this differently this season?

I suspect it has to do with the reduced length of the Race itself, which is about 15 days shorter than it used to be. Many of the past Pit Stops were 36 hours, not 12. I don’t think they have the luxury of giving the Racers a full day and a half off any more, but they need some breaks longer than 12 hours.

A good episode that could only be better if Russell showed up with a hidden immunity idol but I digress.

Team Zebra is just hanging on by a thread and probably deserved to go. Ericka has zero gumption. Their decision to take the subway wasn’t the best one however once they made it to the rope pull they should have been inspired (he was) to kick some bootie. The Gay Bros were feeling upper body tiredness from kayaking so Ericka should have sucked it up.

Going to the theater was another example of her lackluster enthusiasm. She openly said that looking for the instrument should be hard and she wasn’t inclined to look under things or words to that effect. Same thing with counting bells in the tower.

Even if they were last she still needed to hustle to make up for the time difference in case it was a non-elimination round, as it was. I wonder how much time was wasted with her literally giving up once the other teams left the theater.

My score - Meg and Chey will win unless they do something really dumb or fate befalls them. Gay Bros or Trotters are a toss up with either team capable of pulling off an upset. Team Zebra just doesn’t have the winner mentality a this stage of the race. Definite 4th place finish.

I think Brian & Ericka really need someone to completely flub the Detour or Roadblock. The Globetrotters seem to be the only team with the capability to do that.
