‘Amazing Race’: Bogged down in Estonia

November 16th, 2009, 9:55 am · 4 Comments · posted by The Watcher

What is a candlebra? For a few minutes Sunday night, I thought “The Amazing Race” would finish the season without Nate “Big Easy” Lofton, who seemed to be sinking irretrievably into the bogs of Estonia.

And it was a good metaphor for the season, which seems to be sinking into a bog of boring Detours. The teams finished the bog Detour in pretty much the same order in which they arrived, with no hope of catching Megan & Cheyne and no hope at all for Matt & Gary.

And don’t even get me started on the 15-hour wait for the ferry from Stockholm to Tallin. There may have been production reasons for it, but to the viewer that layover made no sense. Why not just start the teams mid-morning or early afternoon?

The Roadblock was a little better, although all of the teams were able to decipher the blank scroll in reasonable time. (Any time you’re confronted with invisible ink, your first instinct should be to heat the paper. Just be careful not to set it on fire.)

It’s too bad, because we are left with an excellent final four: Megan & Cheyne are strong; Meghan is one of the most impressively athletic women we’ve seen on the show. Flight Time & Big Easy are one of the most fun and likeable teams ever; Sam & Dan’s brotherly feuding is entertaining; and Brian & Ericka seem perpetually doomed but keep scratching to stay in the game.

Matt and Gary were goners from the beginning. I don’t know if it was factual or just editing but they seemed unable to catch up even when all were delayed for the ferry. Once on the ground they just couldn’t seem to gain any forward momentum and the Saunabus was a Speedbump? Five minutes in a sauna with a smoking hot blonde is somehow a bad thing designed to punish them for coming in last? Um, okay…

Meg and Cheyne will likely win it all although when Chenye says he’s competitive it’s likely with her for mirror time in the morning. She’s much more of an athlete than he is although I don’t think I’d say she’s the best female I’ve seen. Instead, I’d choose either Dustin or Kandice from Season 10.

The Gay Bros are interesting although they seem to be a little angrier than necessary. Perhaps there’s some stuff happening that we aren’t seeing. Still, I’d like the one brother’s comment about the Estonia hotties at volleyball. They can certainly can win it all and I’d call them my second place choice. Very good players at this stage but the focused anger on the Globetrotters might do them in.

Team Zebra still leaves me wondering who they are. Some weeks they are strong and determined competitors and others lackluster. I don’t see them pulling off a win because their track record really hasn’ been an impressive Win, Place or Show. They seem to be the beer-battered zebra on the plains with hungry lions nearby.

The ‘Trotters are my favorite although I’m a little concerned with them. They would have been eliminated but for the girl failing to go down the waterslide and likewise when the poker players couldn’t handle the physical stuff. And figuring out the combo on the briefcase was too much of a stumper for them but eventually they figure things out. Physical challenges are easy but the mental stuff takes them awhile and I don’t know how many chances they’re going to have.

I can’t add much to your analysis. I do think Meghan could whip Dustin, though. Dustin was also a great athlete, but Meghan is bigger. Interesting that they are both from San Diego.

I don’t understand the animosity with the Gay Brothers & the Globetrotters - especially since the Brothers have received the same if not more help from previous alliances.

I don’t think the Globetrotters will be able to win because the final challenge is always more of a mental challenge than a physical one and we’ve seen all season how they struggle with those challenges.
