After a few hours of softening your brain on the likes of “Big Brother” and “L.A. Ink,” it’s good to give it a little exercise.

The History Channel’s decidedly non-historical series “The Universe” gives an up-to-date survey of the latest discoveries about outer space. Tonight, “The Universe” visits the outer planets of our solar system, with a side trip to Neptune’s intriguing moon Triton.

“The Universe” airs at 9 p.m. and, for the insomniac crowd, repeats at 1 a.m.
